When
coming to Alaska to fish for trout, one thing you
must have for your trip is an assortment of beads.
Beads are an imitation of Salmon spawn ( fish eggs
), and trout realize that there isn’t a higher
source of protein available ( other than flesh ).
But remember, all beads are not created equal.
Beads
which can come in a variety of colors and sizes, is
the Alaskan way of matching the hatch. The different
shades of the beads represents the metamorphose of
the egg, and how long that egg has been in the water,
thus the lighter and more mottled the egg is, chances
are it has been in the water for quite awhile. The
different sizes of beads coincides with the specific
species of Salmon that laid that particular sized
egg, i.e.; a 10mm bead would represent a King egg,
while a 6 – 7 mm bead would represent Red Salmon
spawn. Take this advice from someone who has been
fishing beads for over twenty years, and catching
Trophy Trout.
If
I only had one thing I could bring to Alaska to fish
for trout, it would be a bead box with beads in various
shades and sizes.
