COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions About Our Alaska Fishing Trips
Our guide has compiled answers to the most common questions asked by anglers and families planning a fishing adventure on the Kenai River and beyond. From gear and safety to trip logistics, we help take the guesswork out of your Alaska fishing charter.
What fishing gear and equipment are provided on trips?
All necessary fishing equipment is provided for both fly-fishing and conventional gear preferences. Our custom 20 ft. Willie Classic powerboat is equipped with state-of-the-art rods, reels, and tackle suitable for pursuing Rainbow Trout, Sockeye and Coho salmon, Dolly Varden, and Steelhead. If you have a preferred rod or reel, you are welcome to bring it, but it is not required. We prioritize a stress-free experience, ensuring that novice, experienced, and family anglers have the right tools for a successful day on the water.
Is the Kenai River fishing trip suitable for beginners and families?
Absolutely. Our guided fishing charters are designed for all ages and skill levels, including families and first-time anglers. Dan Hardy is a life-long educator who enjoys teaching the fundamentals of sport fishing to children, adults, and seasoned fishers alike. We provide patient instruction, making sure everyone is comfortable and confident, whether using fly or spinning gear. Safety is paramount, and our US Coast Guard and First Aid certifications add an extra layer of assurance for families.
How do I book a fishing trip, and what are the rates?
Booking is simple: contact us by phone or email to discuss your preferred dates and receive guidance on the best timing for salmon or trout runs. Rates are $300 per client per day from May through July and $350 per client per day from August through October, based on double occupancy. We recommend booking early, especially for peak salmon season. At this time, we do not have an online booking calendar; direct communication ensures a personalized planning process.
What should I bring for a day on the water?
We recommend wearing layered, weather-appropriate clothing, including rain gear and non-slip footwear. Sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, and a camera are also helpful. While all fishing gear is provided, you may bring personal items, snacks, and beverages as needed. Please note that Alaska state fishing licenses are required and must be purchased separately before your trip. Additional details will be provided during the booking process to ensure you are fully prepared.
How is safety handled during the fishing trip?
Your safety is our top priority. Dan Hardy is a US Coast Guard certified captain, Kenai River School graduate, and holds current CPR and First Aid certifications. Our powerboat meets all state and federal safety requirements, and life vests are provided for all passengers. Before each trip, a full safety briefing covers boat operations and river conditions. We closely monitor weather and water conditions to ensure a safe, enjoyable day fishing the Kenai River.
What species can we target, and when is the best time to fish?
The Middle Kenai River offers exceptional opportunities for Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden, Sockeye salmon, and Coho salmon. The peak salmon runs occur from June through early September, while trophy Rainbow Trout fishing is best from late June through October. We tailor each trip to current fishery conditions, leveraging decades of local knowledge to maximize your chance of landing the 'big one.' For specific timing based on your interests, contact us directly.
Are meals or drinks provided during the fishing trip?
Currently, we do not provide meals or beverages as part of the trip package. We encourage guests to bring their own snacks, lunches, and drinks to enjoy during the day. A cooler can be made available on the boat for food storage. If you have specific dietary needs or questions about local options for meals before or after your trip, we are happy to offer recommendations.
